Hi assorted posters,

I'm off to New Zealand at the end of February. Going for a total of 7 weeks.

First week I'll be in Auckland, and then for the rest of March I'll be living in Hamilton with friends out there.

End of March, I travel to Christchurch to meet a friend travelling up from Dunedin and we've hired an RV to drive round in. Gonna head to Queenstown and then up to the north island - we have to drop the van off in Auckland before getting home. 10 days in total in the RV.

My question is, for any Blues who have been out there or live there currently (@deipnosophist , @Kiwi , @BlueInNZ ?), would you have any specific recommendations? Cheers!

Queenstown - nevis bungee. Milford sound, otago peninsula, coastline highway drive around kaikoura, fox glacier, wellington, rotorua are all worth it. Don't waste too much time with Auckland and Christchurch though.

Cheers mate!

I land in Auckland and will be off straight to Hamilton from there, for about two days. If I've got over the jet lag enough I'm planning to go to the NZ-Bangaldesh test which is on in Hamilton that first weekend of March.

From there I'm up to Auckland for a few days as me and a few others are seeing the Arctic Monkeys.

Christchurch will just be a one-night jobby. Flying down there for the night, picking up the RV the next morning and then driving over to Queenstown.

Want to get to Kaikoura and the Milford Sound, definitely. Will work our way up and hopefully have a day or two in Wellington.

.... Probably the other thing I'd suggest mate is to pre-book your travel plans, especially in the south island, as early as you possibly can. I work in the travel industry in Christchurch, and currently New Zealand is experiencing a tourist boom, which is great, but demand often exceeds supply (car rental / accommodation) especially in the smaller towns in the south.

As @cronullasharks says, the well-worn hot spots are in the south island. I'd also add Nelson, Kaiteriteri at the top of the south island, beautiful beaches there. The west coast of the south is ruggedly picturesque, Hawkes Bay in the north island is fantastic as well - beaches and top-class vineyards if that's your thing.

Good luck in Hamilton mate is all I can say, don't judge the rest of our beautiful land based on that! (Its not that bad, really) ;).

Lastly, March is a great time of year to be in New Zealand - the weather normally is very settled, and hopefully you miss the worst excesses of the tourist season (which is in late January / February).

Yep, got an AirBnb sorted for Auckland (my mates are already out there in Hamilton and have been since March - so will be living with them), and just need to get a hotel booked in Christchurch for March 31st. Had a look and it's coming to £27 for what I'm guessing is your equivalent of an Ibis, which will be fine. After that the RV is our accommodation, so all good!

Hah, yeh my mates are in Hamilton purely as they're playing hockey there, or have been last year. They knock about elsewhere when they can and I don't think it's the season while I'm there, so we'll be going about places on weekends when they aren't working.

And thanks very much!

Drive safe in the RV mate. Honestly, I'm convinced that we're the world's maddest drivers. New Zealand roads (especially in the south) aren't the greatest either
