Can anyone recommend any places they've been in Europe? I'm going to be doing a bit of travelling over the summer hopefully and I'm trying to plan a route.

Fairly budget conscious but not just relying on dirt cheap hotels etc.

I planned a trip last year but it never really panned out. Hopefully it will be different this year. A few places I would quite like to go are Salzburg, Bratislava, Munich, Hamburg etc.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried busabout mate?

I went round mainly western Europe doing that 4 years ago. You'll meet a lot of aussies and kiwis and if you ever go there will not pay accommodation.

I went Prague, Krakow, Budapest, Belgrade and Zagreb last year.

Prague is a cracking city full of fit birds and good beer, it feels like a fairy tale.

Krakow is full of fit birds and cheap beer.

Budapest is a cracking city, though spoiled by dog turd all over the streets. A mix of birds here, very polemic. They were either proper fit or dogs.

Belgrade was my favourite. Absolutely awesome. Beer, birds. Great people.

Zagreb was nice but little to do. Bars were good though and the birds? Omg the birds. Fittest I've ever seen.

Hope this helps.

If you're on a budget Eastern Europe might be an option? Cheaper but still loads of cool places. The Balkans for example.

If you're planning to be in Germany, Berlin is an ace city, got everything. Night life is great and loads to keep you busy during the day too.

Spain is also ace, loads of cool places (e.g. Madrid, Barca, Bilbao, Andalucia). Italy's worth a visit too.

Will check out busabout tomorrow, my laptop is being too slow.

Off to Poland in October and went last year so going to give it a miss this time. But I like your other suggestions, birds and beer. What could go wrong? Do fancy Budapest and Zagreb. Seen a few people say they felt a bit on edge in Belgrade, is it like that?

Might fly into Germany on a cheap one before heading around from there so I will probably go there. Always wanted to go to Barcelona

How much is it to go drinking in your average Berlin bar @Billy Dean I'm going there next month

Seen a few people say they felt a bit on edge in Belgrade, is it like that?

I was mindful of my belongings where ever I went (I. E. Camera) but felt safe enough to walk back to my hostel by myself at about 2 AM. If I could offer you one bit of advice though - do not travel to and from Belgrade on a night train.

What sort of things are you looking for?

I like sightseeing, and I like culture. (Just as an example two of my favourite cities, Paris and Vienna, are a mix of these two things). I like places where I can walk around quite easily and just take in the city. Also hoping to take in some football whilst I'm away, so a boss footy team wouldn't go amiss ;)

Fair enough, might have to check it out. Yeah heard some dodgy things about those night trains, not just in Belgrade but in Hungary and Slovakia as well

Portugal is ace - everything you want in a smallish easy to travel in country. Culture, beaches, cheap beer, fine women, ace seafood

Budapest is ace. Good night life, tons of sightseeing, the Turkish bathhouses are cool too.

The RyanAir flights there actually fly into the real Budapest airport too, you can take normal city public transit into town.

This is the hostel I stayed at: http://www.bigfishhostel.com/budapest/

Everybody there was super friendly and the place was very well kept in a good location. Actually hung out with a Villa fan for a bit one night, he was very fascinated by the Yank Evertonian. He had never heard of such a thing before lol.

Budapest is awesome.

I wouldn't bother with Bratislava, its pretty enough but if you go to Krakow (which is basically a better version) there's no point.

Slovenia is great.

Gdansk/sopot great.

L'viv well worth a visit.

Munich and Berlin are good.

Copenhagen is good.

Really liked Vilnius, small quaint place, really cheap beer and stunning birds, less touristy as well.

Was definitely considering doing a night bus or train somewhere along the line. How much do you save with that pass? seems expensive

Depends on how many places you want to visit. It also gives you freedom of choice if you change your mind about visiting a place. For long distance journeys it can save you heaps, especially if you haven't booked your tickets a couple of months in advance
