I have a bit of a problem.

I'm going to Turkey on Thursday for 10 nights but I can't seem to get a company to give me insurance. I have type 1 Diabetes and have had raised cholestoral in the past, it's not an issue insuring me for that but the problem is my GP is monitoring my Liver Function as it's slightly raised. I've emphasised to the insurance companies I've spoken to that it's not at a dangerous level and it isn't being investigated with a specialist don't they don't want to know as I've had no diagnosis. It seems ridiculous to me!

If anyone could recommend an insurance provider that could help or give me advise on whether I need to disclose my liver function being monitored I'd be grateful.

Thanks in advance!

Im pretty sure a lot of people would have a slightly raised liver function test if theyd had their bloods done. Theres no immediate diagnosis unless theres other liver probs...it can just happen without underlying disease. Im a heart patient and mines been raised the odd time for nothing in the past and Im on an 80mg statin amongst other tabs. Why wont they insure you if your major health problem is under control ? Maybe have a word with your GP's sec tomorrow to clarify it before you get the insurance sorted properly. I guess you will still get insured but may have to pay a higher premium.

You probably need to declare the possible liver condition mate. Although you're not being treated for it, if you needed medical assistance while out there and you hadn't declared it, you could end up basically being uninsured.

Give http://www.moneysupermarket.com/travel-insurance/pre-existing-medical-conditions/ a whirl and see what it comes up with.

edit : I wouldn't have thought the Type 1 diabetes was a problem. As @bizzaro has just said, that sort of thing just doesn't fit their computer algorithms so you'd need to pick up the phone and ask to speak to someone who can deal with pre-existing medical condition applications.

Its only for online and telephone applications they cant accept you.

As the last poster said an elevated liver function test is not in itself something that prohibts travel insurance.

The fact your under further investigations does make you have additional risk factors for insurance including serious health issues.

It costs £100k+ to medivac you back to the uk.

Just get a written diagonsis or statement from the gp for the reason for the investigation.

Then make the application in writing if necessary

I used that site mate and actually has a policy that covered the diabetes and cholestroal and it cost just £19. I contacted them yesterday to inform them of the raised Liver function test and because nothing had been diagnosed they cancelled the policy and arranged the refund.

I got a policy today that cost me £150 but they put the raised Liver function test down as Liver Impairment what doesn't sound right to me. I'm waiting for a call back from a diabetes specialist at Fazakerley hospital who can hopefully advise me.

That's pretty much what I've gone through today accept I've not been able to speak to my gp or consultant at the hosp.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Can you not just rock up at a hospital in Turkey ?

Fella near us took his granddaughter to Poland to compete for GB in a Cross country event, had a stroke whilst there and ended up in hospital, they said they'd get him home & he told them not to bother cos the hospital there was far better than our local 1, he stayed there for about 3 months until he was able to fly unaided, maybe had someone with him & a wheelchair but not a medivac job.
Said the hospital was fabulous and very modern as opposed to the dump that is our local one.

I'm guessing he had insurance and the help of a EHIC card due to Poland being in the EU?

If necessary fax or email. Get a named person to help you or consider an insurance broker directly.

They can give insurance pretty quick its just they need details.

Turkey is not part of the EEA (European Economic Area) nor do the British Government have a reciprocal healthcare agreement with Turkey so it is essential to have insurance cover for medical costs.
