My dad had a prius and now an auris.

Most serious mechanical issue he's had was a tail light bulb blew after 8 years.
Yeah, I did 180,000 miles in my Auris without it missing a beat outside of normal servicing. Incredibly reliable motor.

That said, I'm currently driving a 2010 diesel Mondeo I paid £400 for that's got 295,000 on the clock and went through it's last MOT with no advisories, and doesn't even smoke at all. They're mostly motorway miles and it's always been serviced properly. It was the company car I had before the Auris and I bought it off them when I left.

My mom bought a Hyundai when they first came on market here in the U.S. Biggest POS ever, won't touch one.

You never get a second chance to make a first impression.
Hyundai really lucked in the 80s-early 90s. Their cars were so bad nobody bought them so they don't have bad memories.

America's big 3 are still paying for the sins of the 70s-80s.

They were lucky there were a few other crap foreign makes that hit the US market with them, like Yugo and Daihatsu. Everyone knew they were bad, no one bought them.
