5 Things about Spuds.
1) Tottenham Hotspuds got their derogatory nickname, 'The Yips' from their tendency to choke under pressure when through on goal with only the keeper to beat.
2) Chas & (the original) Dave, recorded a song for the 1981 FA Cup Final with fellow Spuds fan Bob Marley, called 'Get Up, Stand Up (Stand up for the Spuds)'. The Club however, preferred Chas & Original Dave's other song 'Glory Glory Tottenham Hotspuds' which went on to reach number 5 in the charts and is still sung to this day.
3)
4) Tottenham got their "Hotspuds" epithet due to their notoriously boggy pitch in the 1930's. Such was the state of the perpetually churned up White Hart Lane pitch, potatoes could be seen growing on it which when harvested were baked and sold at half times.
5) The day in 1919 that Arsenal grabbed Tottenham’s place in the First Division, the club’s pet parrot collapsed and died. The parrot had been a gift from a ship’s captain as the Spurs team returned from a 1908 tour of Argentina & Uruguay, and it lived a healthy and happy life on its perch at White Hart Lane for a full 11 years before its untimely end. Its sad demise is thought to be where the phrase 'as sick as a parrot' came from
