That hardly seems a ringing endorsements of either his talents or his ideology.

You're not actually suggesting that becoming a minister has anything to do with having any talent relating to the department they work in are you?

They generally know f all about whatever it is they're meant to be in charge of, their only 'talents' are that they happen to have been to the same school/gentleman's club as some other career politician in the government.

I don't know much about the man, and to be fair he did always come across alright, and he was a very fine speaker. The 70's were a right mess though, and that was his time in the cabinet at Labour. It's hard to gauge just what influence he had on the trade unions back then as he doesn't appear to be mentioned a great deal.

It confuses me a bit though as I'm not sure how greater freedom really equates to more government, which generally seems to be what Benn advocated.
