The much-maligned Thomas Gravesen will make a January return to Celtic if Everton sign Johann Vogel as a replacement, according to reports.

The former Denmark international, who moved to Parkhead from Real Madrid for £2million in the summer of 2002, has made just three appearances for Everton since joining on loan in the summer.

Gravesen, 31, slipped out of Gordon Strachan's first-team plans after the boss reported grew frustrated that the midfielder would not - or could not - do what he was told to on the pitch. Gravesen didn't even make the bench for Celtic's Scottish Cup final win.

Ahead of the transfer window next month, the Daily Record has claimed Everton will sign their long-term target Vogel from Real Betis, meaning Gravesen will be surplus to requirements.

While the terms of the loan - which was meant to last a season - have not been revealed, it has been speculated that Everton agreed to pay the majority of Gravesen's reported £40,000-a-week wages, so a return could cause a serious strain on Celtic's budget.

Hopefully this is a case of the Daily Record putting a few thoughts together and making a conclusion that is wide of the mark because Gravesen would be unlikely to get anywhere near the first XI and his wages could damage Strachan's transfer plans.

vogel and gravs arent similar players.

moyes has stated his concern about being light in midfield, especially with ANC on the horizon.

i'll be very surprised if gravs returns to celtic early.
