Player Valuation: £40m
Upson to Stoke on a free- I really don't rate Upson. Huth and Shawcross are perfectly capable centrebacks and they have Woodgate as back up. If needs be Collins, Wilkinson and Wilson can also play there. I don't see why they need another senior player for that position, especially a 32 year old on relatively high wages.
Long to West Brom for £4.5m rising to £6m- An ambitious signing. His record is 1 in 4 for Reading and 1 in 3 for his country, which is good but not outstanding. Considering that he's half the price of Connor Wickham and they have similar goalscoring records, it has to be seen as decent business. Having tied down Brunt to a new deal and brought in Foster on loan, West Brom have definitely kicked on.
McClean to Sunderland for £300k- I think a few teams have been looking at the young, irish winger. Bruce needed someone in that position and he didn't have a lot left to spend. For that sort of money he can't really go wrong.
Oxlade-Chamberlain to Arsenal for £12m. It's an awful lot of money for a 17 year old. Wenger is obviously hoping he becomes the next Theo Walcott, but we haven't seen the best of the original Walcott yet. I think that Arsenal have to manage their finances carefully, so you do have to question the wisdom of buying for the long term when they have short term deficiencies that are still to be addressed. The jury is out on this one.
