Was a discussion in my house today about tipping the postman, which i thought was stupid, mainly because there are loads of people who work just as hard or harder than the postie but don't get one.

Do you tip people like postmen, binmen etc ?

I tip binmen with my council tax.

I tip the postman by forking out £3.70 just to send a medium sized parcel second class signed for.

£6.30 if it goes above 1kg

I tipped the bloke that delivers our shopping this year, we tend to get the same driver most times so gave him some money and a card.

Binmen and Postman are miserable tosspots though so they get nothing.

No. I only tip services people: like taxi drivers, food deliveries, restaurant with service...things like that. 10% roughly.

Interestingly, in Spain (Madrid, was there last week) there is no tip culture at all.

It's a two way thing you tip you get better service . Drinks, post, bins.

Agree with this. Having worked as a postie years back when i left school, you would do that little bit extra for those that tipped you at xmas. Stuff like leaving parcels with neighbours and so on.

You should get good service regardless though, that's what they are paid to do. I don't get a tip for doing my job properly.

Do you deal directly with the public though? Also, most of the above roles tend to be very poorly paid. So it's a combination of the two.

Both postmen and binmen earn over £20k a year, not that bad...

Okay sorry I meant say for a binman - in the context of getting off their arse in the freezing cold to carry smelly bins about. It's a hard job and a family would struggle to live on that single wage (which is my personal definition of poorly paid).
