Everton Captain Phil Neville has heaped praise on American keeper Tim Howard following his new club record of 16 clean sheets in a season – beating Neville Southall’s best – against Tottenham.
“Tim just hates conceding goals, even in training.
“On Thursday we had a seven-a-side game in which he let one in and he wasn’t happy about it.
“When that happens he really lets his defenders know. It’s not just on Saturday in the game that keepers such as Tim don’t like conceding – they don’t like letting them in, full stop!”
"When you look at the top three, you’d say Edwin Van der Sar, David James and Tim.
“They’re eight or nine years older than him, too, so we have one of the best around.
“Consistency is his key and he’s getting better all the time too.
“Every good team needs a great keeper and we have got one.
“You know you’re doing a decent job when you’re coming off *without earache! We can win 2-1 and, if we’ve conceded, he’ll let you know about it.
“He was happy against Spurs because he kept a clean sheet. He’s a typical Yank – bubbly, bouncy and springy. A bit like Tigger, really.”
