Our goalkeeper and central defenders need a BIG shake up.
I'd be quite happy to see Howard sold. He seems to be a great guy and has given us some outstanding performances, also perhaps this season he's just been out of form.....however he's not going to get much better than he has been -- an AVERAGE mid table level goalkeeper who is quiet as a mouse behind the defence.
Butland NEEDS to be signed. Not ANOTHER 2nd rate keeper like Mucha or rumoured Craig Gordon.
This was the most exciting possible signing for me in the summer, who knows if our interest was real or nonsense but this would have proven to me that we were serious about pushing on a level and signing someone who could potentially be a top 4 goalkeeper.....
The centre backs should be 2 left footers and 2 right footers;
LCB -- Distin (we hopefully will sign Forren)
RCB -- Jagielka / Duffy
This means Heitinga out and then Duffy and Distin as cover once Forren has established himself.
As a matter of fact, I'd actually be looking to integrate Duffy into the 1st eleven ASAP and sell Jagielka while he still has resale value.
We simply cannot afford to keep players till their close to retirement as their values plummet (See Cahill / Arteta)....with Distin this can't be helped but with Jagielka we could possibly bring in 10mil for him and rebuild a bit more wisely with youth...
So there you have it;
Howard / Heitinga / Jagielka all OUT and Butland / Forren and Duffy all being brought in.....
For those of you seeing a kneejerk -- Ive said this since last Jan and beyond.
Get the squad age down and while you're at it Moyes -- adios to Neville and adieu to sicknote Anichebe.
EDIT -- I'm expecting some "Duffy/Butland/Forren are all unproven" etc etc....but in fact could they be any worse than the 'Old Guard?'
