The Echo that night had their manager (can't remember who it was) saying tonight will prove who was the best! Seem to remember it being on a Thursday night but not sure if true.

I think your spot on mate I remember it being a Thursday their manager was Joe Fagan they had the European cup final 6 days later his comments were probably a tongue in cheek thing as I always thought he had a lot of class

If only Howard had stayed,not only did the European ban see him off but it was liverpool who threw his name in to Bilbao wtf??? How could this be allowed to happen

Not blaming them as I believe our squad was allowed to stagnate and the players that replaced the older players were just nowhere near as good

Why did he go? money pure and simple,if it wasn't Barclona it was any other team. He never did much after leaving
Everton.In my opinion he was a great player but a very lucky manager,but in his first spell after a very poor start he
gave us our pride back and I'll always be grateful for that.
