I'll cry for America if Romney wins.

Obama all the way, baby!

I'll cry for America regardless of who wins.

Neither candidate is prepared to uphold the Constitution - the right to land, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Even as an observer from the UK I marvel at the genius of foresight that America's founding fathers had in declaring these inalienable rights for all its citizens.

Over-reaching government from both the left and right encroaches on all of these rights and ensures that America is on the road to Serfdom. The transformation from Republic to Democracy has destroyed America and what made her great.

Bold statement that. What should they replace democracy with d'you think?

The USA was set up as a Republic, not a Democracy. They should try going back to being a Republic - that is, a country ruled by LAWS, not ruled by public opinions.

The same transition contributed greatly to the downfall of Roman empire.

Democracy is highly over-rated in general; it leads to mob rule.

This seems to be the type of thinking endorsed by some people in the EU who made Greece and Italy pretty much install technocrats to power, so it's not that fanciful to say it wont be trundled out elsewhere in the West.

I find it chilling. We're a step away from barbarism.

I disagree with that assessment.

The EU has the leaders that it deserves, because that is all their voters can stomach. They elected leaders who are not prepared to address the real problem that too many have been leeching off too few for a long time, and they are not prepared to reverse the mistake of monetary union and withdraw from the Euro because of public opinion. Whatever problems they are in, they want it to be someone else's problem too. A truely Republic Nation State would leave the control of money in the hands of the people, not central planners from other countries. It would still recognise Gold and Silver as money.

By contrast, Democracy says that "anything goes" if that's what the people vote for. It enables confiscation of private property, it means you can be thrown in jail without trial if that is deemed in the public interest. It means you do not have the real right to free speech if what you say is deemed too inciteful.

This ^^^ is complete madness

  • the citizens of the EU signed up for parties that nearly all wanted to indulge in the free movement of capital and labour across borders - they had no choice on that other than to continually spoil their ballot papers. They did not sign up for men in grey suits installed above their head by a panicked euro-bureacratic caste
  • what's gold and silver to do with anything? There'll be no return to a gold standard, if that's what you're driving at - and in any case that was just based on total capitulation to the strongest economic power who's own currency could be approximated to its value, be that Britain via sterling or the US via the dollar, so that's hardly a step forward for a 'Republican nation state'.
  • You have to outline the contours of this 'Republic'. There isn't a system carrying that name that doesn't fail to be run by elites in the end (or maybe that's what you favour?). In any case Democracy and Republicanism aren't exactly mutually exclusive. A Republican government would necessarily have to be elected by the people.

OMG YOU ARE ARGUING OVER POLITICS!!!!!

Honestly, you can go on for minutes, hours, days, week, months and years and you still WOULD NOT change the other persons opinion.

I think it may be a good time to re-ban politics on here as I can only see it getting worse the closer the elections get.

What's wrong with this thread though ?

There's no insults or aggressive behaviour, it's a discussion just like any other.

Fair enough with Religion as that's a far more personal thing, but arguing over politics shouldn't be any different than arguing about Everton, or Sepp Blatter.

(Just seen Nik's comment ffs)

No-one should try to change each other's opinion.

But subtly direct them to the correct path...

*cough* Obama *cough*

;D
