The Yobo enigma

We are all wondering what has gone wrong with our defence this season, silly goals being conceded and panic setting in at the drop of a hat. Last season we had a defence to be proud of, it was the bedrock of our European qualification without doubt.

On Thursday Joey Yobo's play was simply awful. Gone was the elegant domineering centre half who played in every game, back was the mistake riddled player who first landed at GP those 5 years ago. His ball control had gone, he was so easily ruffled it scared me and he couldn't head the ball to save his life, so why the big change. Life at GP should be that much better now with his international room Yakubu being at the club, young Vic endorsing his Nigerian roots yet Joey's games appears to have gone to pot.............any suggestions because I had originally thought the absence of Stubbs was to blame but Stubbsy saved him numerous times on Thursday:o ;) (y)

It's the same reason our attack is mis-firing in my opinion - our midfield. Neville hasn't started the season well, Carsley has been in and out of the team, and Jagielka has had a terrible start to his Everton career. Last year Carsley was one of our best players and did a fantastic job of protecting the defence. This year that protection simply hasn't been there in any shape or form and it's shown.

I agree with what you say but Yobo has stood out at the back as being particularly inconsistant. At times its like someone has been slipping tranquilisers into his lucozade

Allez Yobo !

Just a problem of confidence. He's stronger, he will turn better.

I think its exactly what Bruce said, its the midfield. The midfield has been so woeful this season that they've provided no creativity for the forwards and no protection for the defence. Even the usual hero Arteta has only shined in a small number of matches so far.

As soon as we sort the balance of that midfield out god only knows how far we can go with this team. We're currently in europe, 5th in the prem and all with an absolutely rubbish midfield. Just think what we could do if we learned to pass the ball.

I agree with most of what has been said but it really doesn't fully explain his personal inconsistency. Last season Joey was brilliant, he at times saved us single handedly, he couldn't now he seems lethargic which is just not Joey like. It is also noticeable that team selections from many of you leave him out, last term Lescott, Arteta and Yobo were automatic choices by everyone.

Im glad someone started a thread like this as I was going to do one similar. Yobo has been poor the last couple of games, he kicks it long and hard whenever he gets it and his positional sense has some what left him.

One problem has been the chopping and changing- Moyes needs to find his back four and keep picking the same. I think Baines has looked superb when he has played and has merited his position at right back- lescott in the centre with Stubbs- Jagielka at right back.

One player I am really starting to like is Steven Pinaeer- this guy is a class act and maybe just what we need for the wings. i like the way he and arteta switch and If we get the central midfield sorted we could really acheive something.

I think so much of sport is a mental thing because so much occurs very quickly that you have to be confident in what you're doing. It seems at the moment that a lot of our players lack that instinct and it's showing across the pitch. From a results point of view we've done quite well so it's hard to imagine it being a lack of confidence so I would think it's simply a case of bedding in the new players so that we start playing as a unit again.

The lad is looking like he will push Leon out Mick.

Hows the leg mate, still paining, do you have any pins in it?(y)

yobo was injured and out - has he come back too soon?

has the keeper change and that triangle given him the jitters?

is his mind elsewhere? family? money? international problems? agent?

yeh pins in my ankle- strangest constant pain that I cannot describe. Need to get my wireless sorted out for my laptop as I cant sit on my PC for too long as the ankle swells up.

Anyway- Yobo you say??!!

On the subject of a settled team, I couldn't agree more and this again comes back to the bedding in process. Firstly we've had a good few new players come into the side so that will take a bit of time. Secondly we've had a whole lot of injuries in midfield, which in addition to messing with that area of the pitch has also probably kept either Jagielka or Neville from the right back/centre back area. If we could get a rough estimate of our best eleven given the players on our books I dare say we havn't come close to playing it in any given match yet. let alone give that 'dream team' a chance to play regularly together.

get better soon.

Spot on Bruce, as for this thread I agree Moyes needs to sort out a settled back four. Yobo and Lescott were a good partnership but this has been getting upset with Joleon being used at LB. Then there is the swopping of Hibbert and Neville this does not help.

I said somewhere else I would like to see Jag, Yobo, Lescott and Baines.
