The Verve were massive in my student days, and I was bang into them in that 'I was into them from the start' way that students and nerdy young men are. I definitely have to take the 'tit' option, cos their best stuff all came before Urban Hymns and Forth. Not to say they aren't both strong albums with a lot of epic tracks, but I think A Northern Soul is their best work by a distance. The Ashcroft solo stuff is alright, but it's not a patch on the early Verve output - you'd have to conclude that the space rock influence was McCabe.

I watched them headline an Irish festival in 1998. Irish crowd had 2 very distinct favourites- Robbie Williams and then The Manics.

The Verve deserved better although they called it quits immediately after the gig.
