The UK 2011 Census

Forms just hit the doormat. I'm looking at that 'ethnicity' question closely, tbh.

Q.15 is 'How would you describe your national identity?'

English
Welsh
Scottish
Northern Irish
British
Other

Now that's easy - my identity is English (happy, unhappy or indifferent to it, that's where I was born and who I am).

But the next question throws a spanner in the works:

Q.16 'What is your ethnic group?'

English/Welsh/Scottish/Northern Irish/British
Irish
Gypsy or Irish Traveller
Any other white background

Ethnically I'm mostly Welsh with a bit of Irish thrown in. So why should I have to tick a box that has the English, Scottish and Northern Irish in it? I mean, if they're going to start asking us to be specific about our ethnic group for the first time, in addition to the simple 'nationality' question, they cant be lumping 'English' in with people of Celtic ethnicity.

What a waste of friggin' time that exercise has been. They've had since 2001 to get that right!

TBH, I dont mind filling them in. It's important for future generations to understand where their country stood at certain points in time: a snapshot of who we are and what lives we lead....there's also a fine if you dont complete it!

Nationality will be Scouse when i fill mine in.

Apparently the company, which makes Trident nuclear missiles, cluster bombs and F-16 fighter jets, won the £150m contract to run the census on behalf of the Office for National Statistics.

Mine will be getting lost in the post also

IIRC, I think the pressure was from all the Little Englanders to include this category in the English version of the census (the ethnic option was in the 2001 Scottish census forms). It's comical to think all the racists wont be able to express their English 'purity' - whatver that is.
