What is it with football fans and pundits parroting and regurgitating crap like the "top 6"? Who made this up? Listening to talksh1te, and sky, you think it's a ceiling set in stone that nobody is going to break. It was only in friggin 2016 that Southampton and Leicester finished in this mythical top six, Leicester of all teams winning the title. And let's face it, the only reason it's being referred to it as that, is because United finished 6th, and have only finished in the top 4, three times in the past four seasons.

Does this irritate anyone else?

In the past 25 years of the premer league, the "big 6" has only finished in the top 6 once, and that was last season.
It will fade or grow over the years, i remember a time when the "top 4" was pretty much nailed on to be Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal & Chelsea every year around the Benitez years, so i suppose Spurs and City have at leaast added abit of change to it in the past 6-8 years
And obviously we have had our fair few 5th & 6th finishes along the way along with Aston Villa.

Saying that, i do have a feeling they are pulling away from the rest of the league and that 6 will finish in the top 6 again, with us "best of the rest"

Its kind of funny actually, when it was a "top 4" we would constantly finsih "best of the rest" in 5th, then when city entered it we always seemed to finish 6th, now spurs are in there it seems we are destined for 7th.
Lets pray to god this dosent develop into a "top 17"

Yes, it really bothers me because it shows the arrogant mentality of the media. They practically treat 'the top 6' as a separate league. If we have a good season and are sitting in 4th for a decent amount of time, guaranteed it will switch to 'top 7', then when we inevitably drop to 7th around April, it'll be 'top 6' again.

Because those six wether we like it or not are in Europe practically every year
Last year was a rarity with 2 of them not being in Europe
Plus financially they are richer historically than the rest.
Hopefully Moshiri can change this

or it would be the 'big' 6 with the thinking we are there temporarily and the big 6 remain set in stone

Depends what you mean by "richer historically" than the rest.

Chelsea and Manchester City might be rolling in the dosh these days thanks to their sugar daddy owners but it wasn't too long ago they were struggling financially, playing (in Chelsea's case at least) in decrepit stadia and yo yo ing between divisions.

And none of the other four were "historically richer" than EFC prior to us standing on the platform waving goodbye as the Sky/PL gravy train pulled out of Lime Street circa 1993.

And you know this to be true Bri, because you posted your age the other day and it was around about the same as my own :)

historically is completely relative to the time frame used. by that argument wolves are the first or second biggest club in England

But @BillLovesRoo pointed out early in the thread that last season was the only time those particular six teams finished top six, even in the quarter century that has elapsed since Sky invented football :(

And I am willing to bet they never finished as top six in the ancient days before Sky came along either :)

The media follow the money. They cover man Utd. Arsenal, Lovable FC, Chelsea, Abu Dhabi and Tottenham because collectively they command a huge percentage of public interest.

I bet United have more social media "fans" than the "bottom 14" combined.

That is the world in which the media operate. Who can blame them?
