The Sweeper

Whatever happened to this position?

For those too young the sweeper was a, usually ace, defender who sat ever so slightly weirdly in a back 4 as like an extra one, and could quite often be seen striding out of defence like an utter boss.

Like this:

That there is Matthias Sammer. German. And boss sweeper during his days at Dortmund.

He's pretty much the last proper sweeper I can think of.

Now the reason I think of it is because we have a young lad who is rather boss on the ball at the back.

I give you John 'Better than Sammer' Stones. Everton sweeper of the future.

But why did it die out?

And what other great ones were there?

Games where the opposition park the bus are made for a confident ball player, striding into space from the back to comit players, an ability Stones certainly has. He reminds me of Colin Todd at Derby in the 70's.

I have no idea why it went away actually

Maybe the game has naturally become a bit less defensive?

We never took to it in England really. We preferred 4 at the back as a general rule

We used it in Italia 90 against the Dutch and it worked a treat but then we played it against Cameroon and they demolished us. We swapped back to 4 at the back in the end and sneaked by 3-2

Every single year I create a tactic in FM with a sweeper so that Everton can win everything while taking the piss. BRING BACK SWEEPERS.

Unsure why the system works. Surely you'd just get bummed on the wings as you couldn't get anyone offside as wingers or fast forwards could take off and be goal side of your full backs before the ball's kicked

Franz Beckenbauer greatest sweeper ever. A role mainly used in the german Leagues, old style British defenders didn't have enough composure on the ball. Ferdinand could have been a good sweeper. Stones has those qualities too.
