The success of John Stones.

Player Valuation: £60m
I would like to see a couple of the brightest youngsters from the lower leagues brought to Everton each year.
I read today about our reported interest in the youngster from the MK Dons and it is this profile of player that we need to be looking at.
Youngsters from the championship and Division 1 who get onto the national under 19,20 and under 21teams usually need to have a good deal of quality to get ahead of their premiership counterparts.

I completely agree though let's not get our hopes up too high and put too much pressures on the kids if/when we do sign anyone.
John Stones is one in a million, let's not forget how many young youth internationals sadly do not make the grade.

Saying that, I'm very excited about the prospect of having Ledson/Kenny around the first team next year.

Exactly, and we've signed a number of players from the lower leagues that didn't make it. Lukas for instance, or John Hills way back when.

A lot depends on how young players are treated whether they "train on" or not and I'm hoping a thinker like Roberto will produce long term results via youth recruitment.

The skill levels abound at teen level and it's really fundamental stuff spotting someone who can play it really isn't rocket science. Unfortunately the macho bellends coaching in the Pro game mostly go for the big lad who dominates with athleticism. Too many potential late developers with ability binned in our game and demoralised give it up.

Hopefully we'll follow the Southampton example their production line is nothing short of outstanding

John Stones is one in a million,

Seamus Coleman for £60k - one in 10 million?

Necessity is the mother of invention. I am pleased and proud of the long term and long line of players the club has brought to the fore, in some cases such players are almost guarantees, its when we get it right with a borderline case that we should be doubly thankful.
How is Hallam Hope getting on? Garbutt? Lundstram?

I'm made up for Stones being recognised so soon, and feel his inclusion at international level will heighten his awareness of how far he can go as well as focus his mind on becoming the best he can be. Although I was against it at the time and still am to an extent, the inclusion in 2006 of Walcott paid dividends for Arsenal. Stones, Barks, Shaw getting a taste of big tournament/preparation for is a huge boost to each of them.

John Stones had already played under 21 football for his country and was playing for his club every week. He had already proven he could play as a professional footballer , what was not certain was the level he could reach. When he was signed he was either ready for the first team squad or would spend a season preparing to join the first team squad.

Many of the youngsters mentioned previously had no first team experience and no international background.

I am not talking about 15 or 16 year olds . I am talking 18 or maybe 19.

@blueblue this is something I've been championing for a few years now.

I really think that 3 players a season should be brought in from the lower leagues. A few people on here have been mentioning Will Hughes and if we've seen them and rate them then our scouts must know about them too.

It seems to me that its just common sense to go after these type of young players,

If the ones in England arent quite up to scratch then look overseas. Arsenal have been doing it for years.

the ones in our youth set up would probably start to think whats the point if we kept bringing in loads from outside.

........need to manage expectation that you will rarely find a gem like Stones. Stones was identified by Moyes as top of a number of highly rated young defenders. The approach you suggest is worthy, but it needs a lot of hard work and analysis to identify the right targets.

Nope, you can't have a pre-determined transfer strategy like that. You're basically suggesting buying players for the sake of it. What happens if the manager doesn't have two young players in mind who he thinks will make the grade, should he still go out and sign two youngsters from the lower leagues anyway?

It would be a bizarre strategy if the manager set that plan in motion. The only criteria for us signing players should be: Can we sign them, are they good enough or potentially good enough.

Agree with the buster here.

You can't say 'let's sign 2 of the best lower league players'.

Odds are they won't be a John Stones.

We might be in a position to get much better players too.

We have signed Coleman and Stones in 5 years. That does not mean we should start signing loads of lower league players. Generally they're lower league for a reason.
Right, because Roberto hasn't helped them reach their potential yet.
