This particular league would be bit of a left of field one to follow. But i guess any Russian Blues would follow it obviously.Does anyone shout for any teams in this league? To cut a long story short i used to support Spartak Moscow until i found out their fans are the kopites of Russia!Dynamo Moscow are my team in this league now. They play in Blue. They have a similar profile to Everton with 11 league titles to Evertons 9 and 7 Russian Cups to Evertons 5 FA Cups.Just like us their last trophy win was the Russian Cup in 1995 as well.Maybe if the intrest is there we can use this thread to discuss what's going on in the league.Of course Oumar Niasse used bang in the goals for fun over there.lol

Dynamo Moscow have fallen significantly from grace due to financial difficulties.

Alongside the Ukrainian leagues (where Dnipro, Europa league finalists 3 years ago; and our old Foes Metallist (the new team, the only club folded!) reside in lowly leagues due to "tax" irregularities (I.e. The owners bailed to Russia).

Dynamo were decent in the start of the century, they've moved through a fair few players the big name being Kevin Kuranyi (remember him?).

But whilst the Russian league is finally getting its act together. CSKA, Spartak, Krasnodar have all sorted new stadiums, along with Zenit (WC funded after Gasprom withdrew funding).

But there's a good core of about 5-6 teams who are reasonably decent.

Zenit, CSKA and Spartak being the big three with Lokomotiv and Krasnodar being on the periphery. Krasnodar, are going about their business quietly, but they've started building something. Such the extent that today, is a top of the table clash Krasnodar Vs. Zenit, if Krasnodar win.. they're top!

In summary

Spartak are the Koppites of Russia
Zenit is basically a Chelsea - a relatively nothing club until they got massive investment in relative recent times then became pretty dominant.

CSKA i always had a soft spot for - the old Soviet Army team, imn flux this season after losing the manager to Hull, still got Dzagoev playing for them though who is IMO anyway the leagues best player.

Krasnodar have a good academy and are producing some decent young players - which frankly the country needs as the main Russian squad is getting REALLY old now

Giving advice, watch the BIG match ups, better quality games usually and much much better atmospheres - as most of the games are played to half full stadiums unless it's a game with a bit of history to it - Moscow derbies, Moscow teams against Zenit etc.

Good decision ditching Spartak though, absolute bells they are :)

...you'd just think with the size of the country they'd have a top international team.

Lots of reasons as to why they don't mate, never really recovered from the collapse of the soviet system which hoovered up any promising players into academies to develop them from a young age (combined with losing a lot of Ukranian and other nationalities who used to fill the old soviet/russian team), a complete abandonment of developing young players when money started flooding into the league in favour of bringing in foreign players, which when the money went from the league ended up with a lot of sub standard Russian players having to fill spots in teams and basically a lot of crap imported players, lack of Russian players playing abroad and the difficulty when they do adjusting hasn't helped either - neither has the way the Russian league is structured - meaning that they struggle in Europe due to having the massive break which effectively cuts the season in two halfs with a couple of months between each - means that when the European games come around after Christmas the Russian clubs are effectively kind of in a second pre season mode.

Also competes with Hockey and would say both sports are close in popularity and attracting players to them as well, unlike say England or Germany which has footy as a clear number one sport which hoovers up the best potential talents ahead of the other sports.

There is a lot of Footy clubs aimed at attracting kids springing up all around the country atm and making sure they spot any talent early (a lot affiliated to the bigger clubs) noticeable increase in the number opening over the last 4-5 years though (thinking about getting my lad in one when he's 5/6 which has an affiliation to CSKA) so a clear focus on trying to develop through the youth which ultimately combined with the rules now meaning they have to have a certain number of Russian players in the team, should in theory see it develop over time.

Used to love the old 80's Soviet teams though, always had a couple of players who could hit a 40 yarder through a brick wall :)

Used to follow it a little, had a soft spot for Spartak until the Nazi banners started coming out.

Don’t really follow anyone there now, CSKA used to play decent togger and I thought Krasnodar were quite decent when we played them a few years ago.

I really do vibe with Dynamo Moscow. It's a club with a rich history and that all Blue kit they have is ace.Their not doing to well in the league at the moment but hopefully things will turn around.Would it be fair to say that Spartak CSKA and Dynamo would be the three most popular teams in Moscow while traditionally both Lokomotiv and Torpedo would have smaller followings?

Yeah they came 4th one season. Then they broke some financial regulations and were banned from europe. They lost a lot of their key players, got relegated, but now their back in the top flight again.Dynamo were the third most successful club in the old Soviet Union after Dynamo Kiev and Spartak Moscow.Only both Spartak and CSKA Moscow would have won more Soviet/Russian league titles than Dynamo in the modern era.I suppose if i wanted the glory then the teams to support in Moscow would be Spartak CSKA and Lokomotiv. But im sticking with Dynamo. They are a massive club but they haven't won the league since 1976 and the Russian Cup since 1995.They were the first team from the soviet block to tour the west as well.A club with a great history, and hopefully they will be back at the top table sooner rather than later.Of course Dynamo Moscow are also the oldest club in Russia.
