I like the cut of Harry's jib. Some of his anticz have been brilliant. Hopefully him and his army chums stage a military coup, what a Head of State he would be.
part of the make up of great Britain....
My honest opinion.... This country needs the monarchy, we as a country can be dismissive and off hand about them but they are part of the make up of great Britain....the draw to overseas business and commerce.... People the world over envy what we have..... They may not do anything for you personally but as a nation, what they do for us collectively is immeasurable. We take that away....we're basically an island floating off mainland Europe.
In modern terms what does the monarchy stand for? Pomp, circumstance and an excuse for Britain to show off every now and again. Violent kings and queens and political struggle have been present in nearly every country in the world so citing historical opression seems a bit daft. It's what Monarchy stands for that is the problem, the history of how our current monarchy reigns is one of violence, civil wars and serfdom which is where the term peasants come from, it was essentially a less harsh form of slavery.
there are people who don't even know what the Magna Carta is, I imagine people who know little of British history are more likely to support monarchy and thats from when having debates on it in the past and asking them.
Believing someone is of greater importance because they came out of a royal vagina and that they should be given millions to go around showing people how great they are and that it's an honour to have them in our presence is a regressive ideology.
you say people of the world envy what we have. They have had it, 1/3 of the worlds population had it and despise it so much so they fought wars not to have it, Gandhi proper loved it and the USA wrote a constitution to say how much they want british monarchy to rule them. For every person that envies it there are far more that hate it or the "empire" would still exist.

And best. Take that Ottomans!Blue Cheese said:One of the things that really annoy me, we aren't the only nation to have garnered an Empire it just so happens ours was the most recent.
