Now, maybe it's 'cos I'm just at a low ebb today, maybe it's 'cos I'm sick of 'other' teams still vying for cup honours and you always seem to lose interest the minute your team is knocked out unceremoniously by some lower league team who on the night - Just plain and simply, wanted 'it' more. Maybe it's 'cos, our two flagship mid fielders are now both relegated to the sidelines and we have no one to step in to fill the void. I just don't know right now, maybe it's 'cos our talismanic Antipodean Blue Kangaroo hasn't been leaping with the significance of previous years.
When Arteta limped off, only Nine minutes into the Birmingham match, you looked at the bench with that empty feeling in your stomach. You saw the extensive advertising for 'Early Bird' season tickets and the "Now 70% off at the Megastore " - You suddenly come to the fatal realisation, that THIS IS IT- We have nothing to play for, for the remainder of the season! Yet we still have , what is it, six or seven home games left on our season tickets. Yet, they are already asking us to spend on Next Years - Now! There is no White Knight galloping over the horizon from California, his forehead glistening in the winter sun..there is no wonder kid on the bench, ready to set our hearts racing the way Wayne did when he stripped off and looked primed and ready to come on, there's no Duncan Ferguson-esque bruiser who is going to come on and frighten the life out of the likes of John Terry. We have nothing. Your heart now sinks when Anichebe comes on - not beat faster! It shoudld not be this way - ever! . But the sad reality is our season is over.
Europe, well we know how stiff the competition is for that now. With our current squad we'd be in and out - but still no doubt, embarrass ourselves with the obligatory dvd and merchandise fiasco of last time.
Relegation. We may of dodged that bullet for now, but with ten or so games left and our squad being depleted on a daily basis and our ineffectiveness in front of goal - I'm still not sure we are totally clear of that battle
"Only the Best Will Do.." Now is the time for this squad, manager and back room staff to pull their fingers out of their collective arses and prove to the much maligned paying fans that the club, truly deserves that motto to be associated with our once great club.
From knocking on the door of Europe to hearing the creaking of the trap door of relegation..it's never a dull day at Goodison Park of late ..*gulp*
