Ok so im over here for work purposes, and on the sports channel again I heard the line from a pundit - the genius that is Andy Townsend - that I hate the most.

"Everton have always punched above their weight"

I have NEVER understood this point. Surely, if you are a team doing this consistently, then you are no longer punching ABOVE your weight, what you are achieving IS your (our) weight.

Under Moyes we did well, climbing to the higher reaches and stabilising there. Under Martinez, early days yes, but we are unbeaten and have just beaten the league title favourites.

Is this bland point thrown about my journo's and half-brained pundits just one which revolves around money? Because if that was the case then QPR are a "weight above".

Thoughts lads?

All i'll say is let people keep underrating us and when we prove them wrong it feels better.

It never bothers me when people talk us down, we just get on with it and do our work quietly

It refers to the money league - depending on what criteria you use.

Still doesn't excuse the past decade of winning fk all.

I'm not sure it's intended as patronizing, too an extent it's a compliment.
Sunderland have roughly the same amount of money as us, and look where they are as a club, selling off their 2 best players and getting nothing proven in return.

Nine league titles, five FA cups and a European cup winners cup, with more top flight games than any other team is NOT punching above our weight.

Oh, we overachieve for the money we spend, but, otoh, we spend less money than a club of our stature should so you could say we're really underachievers.

The fact is this team has consistently finished in the top 8 for the best part of a decade, that's very much it's weight class. 2004-05 is the only time we really over performnd.

It is supposed to mean the money we spend.

BUT, most people dont use it in that way. From my experience in talking to other fans, its used as a 'Well your not that good really, but you do quite well....awwwwww' kind of way.

The people who spout this kind of drivel believe that football was invented as a game twenty gears ago.
If Rochdale were bought tomorrow by a wealthy Arabian Sheik we would see Rochdale described as a footballing giant in a very few years.
History means nothing to these people ,just as they are really only interested in half a dozen premiership teams, the rest, including Everton, are just cannon fodder in their eyes.

They are not to be taken seriously.

People are obsessed with spending on transfer fee's. BUT the true measure on were you should finish, is wages.

The more wages you pay, the higher in the table you finish.

So in that way. We should be top 8 all the time.
