The old 3-foreigners rule in European games

Would you re-instate it? Would it make a difference?

Remember this rule? Remember being frustrated slightly by it in the ECWC of 1995/6?

Well, do you think it'd make a difference if it was brought back in? Would it "level the playing field" as the current cliche-of-the-moment goes? I could never see the point of qualifying for Europe, then not being able to field your best side in the competition that it qualified for.

For me, it was just too much red tape for the sake of it, but I'd love to see all the money teams absolutely fume over being knocked out of the CL.

Impossible to enforce when it comes to European players (freedom of trade etc) and there are still restrictions on the number Non-EU players so it is still in force for them.

It was also one of the major contributing factors to the massive premium on English players which still skews the market.

That I didn't know.

There are already rules for the Premier League hence them buying large numbers of teenagers these days.

The stricter work-permit rules, approved by the Home Office on Friday, will came into force on May.

  • A player will have to have been registered with his club from the age of 15 - down from 18 - to qualify as 'home-grown'.
  • The minimum number of home-grown players in a club's first-team squad of 25 will increase from eight to 12, phased over four years from 2016.
  • At least two home-grown players must also be 'club-trained' players - defined as any player, irrespective of nationality, that has been registered for three years at their club from the age of 15.
  • Only the best non-EU foreign players will be granted permission to play in England.

That's in the squad though isn't it? The old rule applied to players actually being on the pitch.

A moneyed team could have 12 homegrown players in its squad, but still field 11 star quality foreigners in a game with ease.

I'm not defending the old rule, I didn't like it.

*foreigners*

Sorry, I can't help it, it hurts my eyes.

Would it weaken the CL or strengthen it?

Probably weaken it initially as there'd be less "stars" on show

The actual style of the football wouldn't change, as clubs like Barcelona drill it into players, but the name value would be considerably less

All that would happen would be that the home grown guys stature would grow, but that would be a gradual thing

It would be like when you kill off some major cast members in a popular TV program. It would take a while for the new ones to gain traction

Are you saying we should kill all foreigners except for 3?

It would help the international game if nothing else as more players would be playing in Europe's top club competition thusly increasing the strength of the national pool (In theory)
In which case I'm completely against it. International football is the scourge of top flight togger these days, absolutely crap.
