Help educate me as an American on the pros and cons of the NHS. Personally I'm for a single payer system here in the US, but many of my countrymen think that means the death of freedom and rationing of health care to the point that you have to have gap insurance just to see a doctor.

Help me out. Give it to me good and bad.

It's fashionable to kick the NHS at the moment, however it's a very good organisation that could possibly be run better. The staff are excellent, by and large, and you may have a wee wait while you wait for an appointment to see a consultant but on the whole it's a very good thing.
