The NHS ahead of deciding who to vote for next year...

A good example of why this debate is often so unhelpful came last night. I popped along to the RSA to listen to Jos de Blok, who was awarded some medal or other as their person of the year (or some such award). He's the founder of the Dutch venture Buurtzorg - http://www.buurtzorgnederland.com/ (@Dutch Toffee probably knows them).

They've got a novel, yet eminently sensible, way of structuring their business so that nurses are both highly qualified, and highly empowered to do their job the way they see fit. The results seem really good, both in terms of staff happiness, patient happiness, and cost of service delivery (Kings Fund piece on them here - http://www.kingsfund.org.uk/sites/files/kf/media/jos-de-blok-buurtzorg-home-healthcare-nov13.pdf).

de Blok is helping to spread the approach into a number of other countries, with Japan currently trying it out. They're a social enterprise that run in a non-profit way, yet I sense that many here would rather poke their eye than even consider something like this in the UK as they're 'private'.
