The New Yankee Workshop

I remember in the late 90s when I first got sky TV I'd stay up till the early hours binge watching Norm in his workshop making all kinds of things out of wood. At the time I was doing a lot of DIY but didn't have the skills or the tools to make anything he'd make. Roughly 25 years later I finally live in a house with a garage and I'm considering turning it in to a bit of a workshop in the hope that by the time I hit retirement I'll be a master craftsman. For now I'm going to start by making a few wooden planters to sit on the new patio and possibly a play house for the kids.

Anyone else in to a bit of amateur joinery?

I would like to get a workshop kitted out with all the tools at some point.

I built this shoe cupboard for my wife many moons ago:

But to be honest I prefer simple woodworking where you hide it afterwards and don't have to worry about the finish as basically I'm lazy. So doing the framework when I converted my garage was more fun for me:

My daughter would like a loft bed with stairs and a little room underneath so that will be my next project.

That is quite impressive to be fair.

I have 2 1/2 workshops which I have built since I retired (young). I have my wood shop, with bench routers, planers, large band saw, table saw, crosscut saw etc. Next door I have my engineering shop with mahoosive milling machine, 6'lathe, surface grinder etc and finally my electronics workshop including a laser cutter and 3d printing facility.

Mostly I repair things for friends or myself - keeping my classic cars going, fitting out a camper van (boats too), furniture for the missus.

I am massively tooled up beyond my skill level but just live the thrill of being able to mend, to be independent of having to ask someone else to do something.

Because I don't have any of the proper kit I'm having to take my car to a garage next week to get its steering centralised and tracking done - I'm dreading it. I hate being in a position where someone us going to try to pretend a job is a lot harder than it is just to justify an enormous price for 30 minutes work. I get quite terse as I'm lied to!

Can I come and live with you?
Together we could conquer the world

I will bring all my power tools as well. I have a full range of the DeWalt 540v cordless gear. Also a couple of grands worth of various other hand and power tools.

Just PM me your address, I'll start packing now.

That's a fine looking cupboard. Did you make everything yourself including the doors & shelves? That's the kind of thing I aspire to but don't have the tools for yet. I can manage the simple framing type of stuff you've done.

I bow to your experience here.
To use building as a rough guide here, consider initial 'works' to be investigative, try things out, small test holes etc before we move into full excavation at a later date with the aim of getting as big a structure as you can in the space available
