(FOX 5/KUSI) — Gramma, a Galapagos tortoise that was the oldest living animal at the San Diego Zoo, has died.

The zoo said Gramma had ongoing bone conditions and that caretakers had to make the difficult decision to say goodbye to the legendary resident of the zoo.

Gramma the Galapagos tortoiseGramma was known among her San Diego Zoo caretakers as The Queen of the Zoo.
Gramma arrived at the zoo between 1928 and 1931, but she was already several decades old. A Facebook post by the zoo announcing her death said she may have been 141 years old, which would make her birth year around 1884.

Tortoises are one of the land animals with the longest lifespans, with some recorded to have reached close to 200 years of age, including one alive today on the African island of Saint Helena that is at least 192.

During her time there, she became an ambassador for reptile conservation and was admired by generations of visitors, eventually earning from her caretakers the nickname, ā€œThe Queen of the Zoo.ā€
