The Merseyside Derby At Home

I posted this in the fixture thread, but it belongs in here:

From the PL on fixture setting: "Some of the groundwork is done in the preceding weeks when questionnaires are sent to clubs for requests"

Season 2002/03 was the last time the Derby was played at Anfield first. So it's ten years and counting. You have to assume this is now at the request of the clubs? Why though?

I think it gives them an advantage. Home form takes a bit of time to get together and we face them early - sometimes, as per this season about 4th/5th home game in. I dont know why Everton would agree to this.

My derby day nut scratcher conundrum theory:

We have now had this derby order NINE years in a row, and the odds of this occurring are admittedly very long indeed. I like everyone else am certain that there are external factors, so let's look at this rationally (and try to keep up).

By the time the 2003/04 fixtures were released, the first derby had been played at anfield 5 times, versus (soon to be) 7 times at goodison... fair enough.

But over the previous three seasons, the order had alternated:

2000/1: Anfield first
2001/2: Goodison first
2002/3: Anfield first
2003/4: Goodison first

This meant that there was a lengthy wait between each home derby for one team while the other played consecutive home derbies close together. For example: Liverpool had a long wait from 29th october 2000 until 23rd february 2002 for the anfield derby, while we had home derbies close together, in april 2001 and september 2001.

So it seems as though some sort of agreement was struck in 2003 to keep the order as it has been since. In 2009, the opportunity was there to change the order, since the most recent derby had been at goodison (dan gosling's winner on 4th february), and the anfield derby would have to be first then to retain the alternating order. The change did not occur however, possibly because that would have been three anfield derbies in the calendar year of 2009.

While this whole thing is not a massive issue, it can unwittingly affect a season's outcome, and depending on the surrounding fixtures, MIGHT provide one team with a unintentional advantage. As such, I believe moderation is the order of the day, and the club busybodies would do well to read this thread and realise that a change is sometimes needed.

In the late 80s to late 90s, I think they got it right, because we had the home derby first for 2 or 3 seasons, then change, a couple of seasons away first, then change. There was nothing predictable, and neither team particularly lost out it seems.

Other interesting trends which we have never really noticed

9 seasons from 1995 to 2004 - Home first vs Southampton*
*With the exception of 2002/03
6 seasons from 2001 to 2007 - Away first vs Blackburn
6 seasons from 1998 to 2004 - Home first vs Chelsea
6 seasons from 2005 to now - Away first vs Tottenham*
*With the exception of 2009/10
6 seasons from 2005 to now - Home first vs Wigan*
*With the exception of 2008/09
