Since I've been an Evertonian, I've always known us to be "skint". I'm not old enough to remember our title winning successes of the mid to late 80s. But I understand we were once known as the "Mersey Millionaires".

Could someone inform me of this period? What other clubs had money within this period and when did it end? I know we smashed the British transfer record for Bob Latchford in the 70s. So I'm assuming it was around this time?

50's and 60's mainly.

When gate money, and a bit of local advertising was the only real income. But the owners were minted.

We were always a wealthy and successful club, things really moved up a level when John Moores decided to bankroll us after WWII.

For me, the big clubs will always be Everton, Villa, Spurs, Arse and MU. The rest are in the shadows.

I don,t really know why.. They ..labelled us the Mersey Millionaires.. it wasnt like we went out and spent thousands on players i would think more ( or should that be MOORE) because of John becoming our chairman . Littlewoods Pools and that
Then as young lads we never had any money as such and often ..nearly always hitched hiked to away games such as
Sheffield (weds and utd )
Leeds
London teams
Burnley ,Blackburn, Blackpool.(Alan Ball)..
Villa, West Brom Birmingham even..
and by hook or crook we got in the grounds of wherever we where.. great days and happy times win , lose or draw..
Don,t ya just love being Everton....

Weren't we pretty flush when we bought Lineker? Seem to remember we pretty much outbid everyone for that one. Probably the last big signing (where we had major pulling power and cash) was Cottee, was between us and Arsenal.
