The legality of Streams

Some comments have been made in matchday threads over recent weeks about not posting links to Streams cos they're illegal, so this is not a thread to encourage posting of links, but what actually is the situation regarding their legality or otherwise? A few months ago i subscribed to livefootball.net for £7.50 a year. I figured it would all be kosher since i was paying, and Gabby or a fit Gabby lookalike promotes it on the frontpage and the page also cites mentions in a lot of the national papers. It's obvious now though that all this site does is provide links to streams you can access for free elsewhere, and to make matters worse the last two Everton games haven't even been listed so i've had to search for them myself. Needless to say i won't be renewing my subscription, but are Streams really illegal? It seems a bit strange if they are since there's a lot of advertising on them. If they were illegal would known brands advertise on them, and wouldn't the sites just be closed down anyway? Or is it a case of them being legal in some countries but not Britain?

The thought struck me that using these free sites is giving nothing back the to Club we love, and i would gladly pay about £20 a year for a reliable stream, but am unwilling to pay the extortionate rates asked for the likes of Sky.

It would be nice to hear peoples' views on all these points.

It's illegal to host streams, but not to watch them.

Or at least that's what someone who studies Law told me.

Thats all 99.9 % do,subscribe to them and they will get you any game and every game when infact all they do is most times is redirect you to site's were we can get them for free, and above is right - It's illegal to host streams, but not to watch them.

Not sure this is strictly true, but you're certainly highly unlikely to get prosecuted for viewing a stream.

If the match isn't local, I watch a stream for our away games, but I am aware that if more and more people start to watch streams ( rather than line the pockets of Murdoch ) then eventually Sky will be less likely to pay over the odds for Premiership football which, eventually, will mean less money coming into EFC.

But I can live with that. If it is breaking the law to watch a stream then I can live with that as well. Every time I drive a car I break the law ( by speeding ). It's a matter of degrees and, that's true, that's true. ( copyright David Byrne ).

Very generous of you that £20 offer, however if we all paid £20 per year as opposed to £30+ per game then there soon wouldn't be anything to watch.

They don't want streams listed on here as

1. posting them in an open forum is the 1st step in getting them shut down.
2. Posting a link to it could possibly leave people open to prosecution, and given that Dylan is stateside I would imagine he doesn't fancy any billion dollar lawsuits just because someone wanted to watch the rezzies training at Marine.
