So for various reasons to do with my job and personal life, I'm probably going into exile this summer. It's honestly something I've never wanted to do, and after yesterday it'll only be harder, but needs must. I've been offered a position at durham uni, so I'll be in the land of the barcodes, I guess.

Anybody ever lived up there, can give me some advice? Anything I should look out for?

I don't think you will like Durham much lid.

On the moving away thing, you'll get them feelings and daft stuff like that start being aware of loads of little things that you'll miss. Put them out of your head as a change of scenery will more than likely be boss for you, and you'll look back fondly on what you're about to go through.

Good luck, but at least you're going to a lovely part of the world. I went to Durham University, a lifetime ago, and had a great time - and it really is a beautiful place.

All the best, but don't become a plastic, remember your roots!

Durham is a wonderful part of the country, i've only ever heard good, and let's be honest, your only ever 3 hours away from home, you could be home every weekend

Grow a pony tail, they love it up there!

Seriously, Co. Durham is a very nice part of the world, you'll enjoy it.

Reject the place - Move to Amsterdam...get loaded and have fun!!

Thanks for the well wishes guys. The job looks decent at least, better pay then my current one and more security.

Thanks for the advice, too. I should grow a pony tail and a beer belly and then go to Amsterdam and hang around not wearing a shirt, is what you're saying right? Works for me.

As someone who has moved many times in my life and moved away from my "hometown" and came back, I can tell you that living in a different city is good for you. It expands your horizons and you get to meet new people, it's a good thing.

Having said that you're only going 3 hours away! In America that's slightly longer than a long commute :)

Durham is a well nice city. Top Uni, too. Well done for getting in there.

Oh, I didn't get in there. Jesus, I'm not smart.

I got offered a job working at the Uni is what I meant.

I can't drive, man. Three hours is about as far as I've even been from Liverpool. We can't all have your adventurous settlers spirit, mate.
