The Ibrox Disaster

I was at Ireland v Italy, the World Champions, in 1985. It was cash at the turnstiles, played at a dilapidated Dalymount Park probably because Lansdowne Road had no floodlights.

I was at Dublin v Galway in the 1983 All Ireland Football Final, again cash accepted for the terraces including Hill 16 where I went.

In both cases there was massive overcrowding, the gates were forced open by the crowds outside, and it was miracle no one was hurt or worse.

Lots of the crowd was on the touchline in the Italy match and, a humorous memory, was of a young Dub handing a bewildered Paolo Rossi the ball to take a throw in. I would love to have heard what he said to the legend!

My cousin was there as a messenger for one of the newspapers. He certainly never forgot what he saw.
There was much hatred and fighting on the terraces and streets in those days. Feelings are less obviously expressed now except on the internet where prods and papes still play out their eternal game of giving and taking offence in equal measure. And it has to be said that neither old firm club has done much to improve matters over the years.
It's almost as though they profit from the situation.
Not much different to about half of England buying the anti-immigration crap sold by Farage and Johnson.
