A few jars of ale was enough for my old Grandad, couldn't shut him up! In truth as a sailor he wasn't subject to many of the grim experiences that infantrymen had to go through, although he was on the Ramillies when she nearly went under.

I think the Sailors had their fair share of horrors too, but I take your point about the trenches though. My Dad always has a soft spot for the Merchant Navy.
