The Great War....

A prime example of the elite whipping up a frenzy to defend something that was no benefit to ordinary people then sitting back while millions died on all sides.

It's astonishing really that the course of 100 years and counting of global history and many of the issues and problems we face as a society today can be traced to the actions one individual (Princip). It may be that global war was inevitable due to the rampant imperialism of the time, but if the events had been delayed by 6 months for example, or not kicked off by such an incendiary event the course of history may been very different.

There were three Everton players killed in active service in WWI, Tom Gracie, Leigh Roose and Wilf Toman.

Leigh Roose was killed on the Western Front in 1917 and awarded the Military Medal.

His citation included the words: “He continued to throw bombs until his arm gave out, and then, joining the covering party, used his rifle with great effect.”

R.I.P.
