GHOSTBUSTERS (1984)

A fantastic example of a hilarious film that doesn't rely on one liners, sight gags or the like - it just excels by having a sparkling script and fantastic performances. It barely needs an introduction as most of the English speaking world have seen it. Just a fantastic film from start to finish.

CLERKS (1994)

I'm not sure whether this is a controversial inclusion or not. For me, it certainly isn't. A very, very well written budget comedy and the breakout movie for director Kevin Smith, Clerks did everything right that it could get right. One or two of the acting performances are weak but that's solely due to the budget; all in all, it's an astonishing effort that gets you laughing by being smart about it's comedy.
Sometimes, the fact it's in black and white can put people off, which is a shame.
THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY (1998)

Overrated? Yes, but even so it's a good comedy with some very memorable scenes. At times it tries too hard for my liking, but a few key performances hold the whole thing together. Ben Stiller's best overall role for me. The balls getting caught in the zipper scene is fantastic comedy, and Diaz is just good to look at FFS.
Ironically, the "hair gel" scene is probably the least funny bit of the whole movie, yet the most referenced. Go figure!
SPACEBALLS (1987)

Loved and hated in equal measure, Spaceballs is the send up of Star Wars etc. (pretty much every popular Sci-Fi movie of the era) from Mel Brooks.
It works if you watch it a few times. I can actually understand why it was hated on release as it has a "cheap" kind of feel to it and you miss the finer details with your first watch. But it grows on you in a big way - Rick Moranis is fantastic in it, he really is.
The archtypal "cult classic".
POLICE ACADEMY (1984)

More sequels than I've had hot dinners, but let's forget about those - the original was good, with a decent effort from the entire cast to make it work. There's nothing cerebral about the humour of course, but it works well enough.
I'm just not sure why Steve Guttenberg was famous... He's the weak point in this film and in every film he was ever in. But that's for another day!
