AIRPLANE! (1980)
![]()
Ahhhh Airplane!... I don't want to meet the person who can sit through this movie and not laugh at least once!
It's tremendous. It didn't have any household names (Nielsen went on to be one) but it was pitch perfect in pretty much every way. It pretty much invented the parody genre and is one of the most quotable movies in history, with iconic lines like "Don't call me Shirley" becoming ingrained in popular culture.
GROUNDHOG DAY (1993)
![]()
Possibly the best pure movie in this entire list, Groundhog Day features Bill Murray at his absolute best. The script sparkles and it's one of those rare films that manages to get you laughing out loud at regular intervals, whilst also drawing you in to the plot.
ZOOLANDER (2001)
![]()
This is one of those films people love to hate, even though it's actually really good! Yes, Ben Stiller isn't the best overall, and this movie isn't a masterpiece, but it has a few really funny moments and the "different" facial expressions always tickle me. Sometimes you have to appreciate something for what it is rather than be snobby about it.
Long live Blue Steel!
SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER & UNCUT (1999)
![]()
The Simpsons tried, and failed. As have Family Guy with a series of straight to DVD fiascos.
South Park, however, succeeded spectacularly. The transition from TV series to movie was flawless, with an over the top, lavish musical comedy focusing on an all out war between the USA and Canada, leading to Satan invading Earth from Hell with Saddam Hussein.
Yep, an Oscar winning script it is not, but it's genuinely hilarious and unexpectedly deep as it alternates from Stan hallucinating about a clitorus to poignant satire on the futility of war at the drop of a hat.
Ridiculous underated by those who cannot see beyond the crude animation, and will be looked back on as a true comedy classic.
HOT TUB TIME MACHINE (2010)
![]()
Maybe a controversial inclusion, but it does what comedy is meant to do - make you laugh!
It's ridiculous, quirky, unbelievably stupid and yet for all that it works. It gets the key things right, and it's no surprise to see it rapidly developing into a cult classic.
