MONTY PYTHON & THE HOLY GRAIL (1975)
![]()
The Python crew created a lot of nonsense that hasn't really stood the test of time - but in the Holy Grail they created a timeless masterpiece that is every bit as hilarious as it was upon release.
It sets the tone immediately with the infamous coconut clapping horse ride, the infamous "do swallows migrate?" riddle... in fact, the one word to describe this entire film is "infamous". It pretty much inspired every comedy in the last 38 years and redefined British and international comedy forever.
THE NAKED GUN: FROM THE FILES OF POLICE SQUAD (1988)
![]()
The late, great Leslie Nielsen pretty much became a comedy icon with his marvellous portrayal of Frank Drebin in this send up of the detective genre.
An incompetent cop who finds himself in bizarre situations, ultimately ending in physical comedy gags aplenty, the whole Naked Gun franchise is fantastic for when you want a cheap laugh (lines like "Nice beaver!" always raise a smile no matter how often you've seen the movie!)
THE HANGOVER (2009)
![]()
Comedy has went through a bit of a lull in the last decade, with "classic" comedies few and far between. The Hangover, however, turned that all round with a brilliant piece of comic indulgence.
The premise isn't really original - a bachelor party goes wrong - but the execution of the movie is sublime, capturing surrealism, sight gags and one liners in abundance.
Shame about the crap sequel, but it doesn't tarnish the original.
STEP BROTHERS (2008)
![]()
Step Brothers makes it into the Champions League for two reasons - "boats and hoes" and for having someone rub their testicles on a drum kit on film.
Need I say more?! It's not cerebral comedy of course, but it gets you chuckling, and that's ultimately what a comedy should be doing.
BILL & TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE (1989)
![]()
Back in the late 80s was a time when Keanu Reeves actually smiled in movies. For that alone, Bill & Ted is noteworthy, but it's also a really good movie. Whilst it has no "laugh out loud" moments to speak of, the whole film makes you smile consistently - special shout out for one of my favourite lines in a movie: "Who was Joan of Arc?" "Noah's wife?" ^^
