You'd be surprised mate. Maybe 100% is a bit much, I'll lower it to 99%.

The major rock milestones since then (which there aren't many) don't happen without Nevermind.

Nirvana and Nevermind are so far reaching that almost everyone has heard Smells Like Teen Spirit at the very least and most can recognise the iconic video or album cover to match. They kicked the door open for alternative music to be acceptable in the mainstream. Which is where Nu Metal and Pop Punk subsequently profited. Even a band like Oasis don't play Knebworth off the back of Definitely Maybe without Nevermind. I might be going over the top a bit like but I believe it to be true. The funny thing is that it isn't even my favourite album of all time.

nah my man, i know loads of people who've never heard of Nirvana, nevermind their albums or music videos lol

the world is a massive place, and the people within it are so different...thank all yer gods.

now western males of a certain age range, say 30-45? yes, they will virtually all have heard of Nirvana (tho' not necessarily specifics like albums, songs).

This is my all time favourite album too. I was 13/14 when it came out and wasn't really fussed about guitar music till I heard this. Great album and never gets old for me. Still listen to it fairly regularly now. Saw Liam Gallagher live this year and he did about half of this album. Magic.
My youngest son was really into them.I used to have no end of fun asking him if they were a Beatles tribute band on an off day.

I've been buying CD's again, lost my 500+ collection when I moved country back in 2005. The 13 years since then like most of us I've made do with MP3's & online streams, but the whole time something was missing:

  • audio quality.
  • the ritualistic process of putting on an album with the intention of listening to it properly.
  • the satisfaction of having a physical collection.
  • proper flow: many of my favourite albums have no breaks between songs (many Floyds or electronica, for example). Online streams often ruin these vibes by having a half-second silent gap between each track because the uploader's not arsed about flow. Or if you have MP3's your player may struggle to play them as gapless as intended.

Fortunately Ebay & the like have millions of 2nd-hand audio CD's for supercheap, so been re-buying a lot of old favourites: been enjoying Felt Mountain, Big Science, Music for the Jilted Generation, Distance to Goa 4 and more on a battered Sony Discman I also filched off Ebay for single-digit money. Phones-out to my speakers and already the sound is great! Seriously thinking of hunting down a proper CD-player with decent outputs now.
