The good/nice things that footballers do on the pitch

We will never forget the sportsmanship of much-derided Paolo Di Canio when, in the 1999-2000 season, playing for West Ham at Goodison, he caught the ball rather than put it in our unguarded goal, when he saw Paul Gerrard lying badly injured. For those too young to remember, Paul was our goalkeeper and had dislocated his knee. I have put links to Paul Gerrard looking back at it and also a video of the incident, but the first one is one that will really make you smile, and wonder why our press (well, our tabloids at least) don't give as much coverage to stories like it, rather than dig for dirt when it comes to today's professional footballers?

Actually I do know, which is why I never buy a tabloid. Anyway, you'll like this if you haven't already seen it. More feel-good stories would be nice to read on this thread. Even if we've read them before it's still nice to be reminded of them.

I thought one of our players not punching the ref and/or strangling Suarez after the Rodwell sending-off deserved far more accolade in the wider game.

OK, I know you were having a laugh, Kiwi, but you've just proved my point about tabloid journalism. Are you the Scum's NZ correspondent by any chance? ;)
of course lad. Thats why I'm posting on a Everton forum :bye:
I remember Schweinsteiger pestering a referee for a few minutes to rescind a yellow card that got a player sent off as he felt that the decision was way too harsh

It's a shame that it's only noticed by those of us who watch every game. You know what it's like though, only the negative things seem to interest the tabloids. I know the Scum is generally avoided in Liverpool but why anyone buys any tabloid has always been a mystery to me. That's probably because I'm a glass-half-full-always-look-for-the-good-in-a-person-rather-than-the-bad type of guy. It's an attitude that has made me an easy target for con artists in the past but I'd sooner be like I am than become the opposite.

Having said that, as far as our players are concerned, when in Rome maybe they ought to do as the Romans do before it's done to them!

That's more like it, mate. I meant the Scum as in The Sun by the way, Kiwi, not the RS.

Di Canio is a nasty man. I don't find what he did remarkable, it's wildly overblown and it certainly doesn't change the fact his general behaviour and demeanour have been appalling.

it was good sportsmanship. at the end of the day, football's a sport and should be won by the better team, scoring an open goal with a keeper down injured is hardly deservedly winning. wouldn't have blamed him for scoring like, don't think gerrard would have got back.

the fact is, bad publicity always sells more than good publicity - it's the way we live.

Slight step away from the actual thread,Eric Cantona whilst serving his ban for the kung fu kick was at Goodison watching the Everton v Mn U game,my lad had stayed to get autographs when Eric came out with his minder
He was very polite, friendly and happily posed for pictures and to sign my lads programme then talked football for a good 20/30 minutes the complete opposite to his portrayed image

He also recently appeared on stage in France in a Hillsborough concert to a crowd of kopites (saw it in the Daily Mail). Misunderstood indeed.

When Arteta was throwing a hissy fit and Baines kicked it out yesterday... Ugh. I normally support such actions. Terrible for somebody to take advantage of it.
