The future of football in Europe

They could always go back to just having the league winners in the Champions League. Mental idea, I know.

My idea would only mean 9 away games. No-one is forced to go to every away game!

Plus I reckon if you stuck Europe's best 10 teams in a league, it would be very close by the end, very tight between top and bottom spots.

There's absolutely no way on this earth that Europe's elite clubs would reduce their season to just 18 games each.

I meant in addition to their normal league games.

This is why we are disagreeing. The op is talking about the prospect of a breakaway league that sees the elite clubs leaving domestic competition. That's what I have been discussing the merits of.

Yep, my point exactly. I think attendances would suffer and fans of massive clubs who expect to challenge for honours would become disillusioned at being reduced to also rans.

Theyre not arsed about though are they, theyre more interested in tv revenue, sponsorship and marketing the brand across the globe.

To be honest though a european super league wont make much difference. Most of the fans of the big clubs world wide see football as more of a reality tv show these days as oppose to sport. They're more interested in the likes of Ronaldo prancing about than the actual outcome of the game

Of course they're arsed about attendances. Try telling that to Arsenal who rake in over £1 million per game. Try telling it to our mutant neighbours who are spending god knows how much to increase capacity to maximise revenue streams.

Just because the tv companies are throwing money around, doesn't mean clubs are going to neglect other sources of revenue.

The reason the Champions league format came into being in the first place was the "big" clubs threatened to break away as a league format gave them more safety from shock results. They then asked for seeding to help them get further in the knockout stage. They then threatened to break away again unless they let runners up, then 3rd place teams join in. This was all designed to ensure that they don't miss out on the gravy train. If those clubs see another way of making more money, then they will have no qualms threatening to break away again.

not that we would be in it anyway but i wouldn't like it. Don't think many fans would to be honest CL is good enough and you can't beat domestic rivalries.
