Interesting replies.. did he write a biography or is there an autobiog worth reading? I have listened to the Fall over the years and there are some very good musical interludes. ATM cannot get past that voice and I'm not sure I will be able to. Critics band usually equals unlistenable for me but they were the soundtrack to folk's teenage/20's years and that's ok by me.

Zero talent promoted by the very doubtful John Peel. Always pretending to be down with the kids. Punk and associated genres promoted being useless as great. If you can't be bothered with learning to play or write good lyrics then go away. Like most of the Manc scene. .....awful
Couldn't disagree more. Music is a primal, visceral thing. Get up there and do your thing, say what you've got to say. That's the beauty of punk etc. Virtuosity is admirable and everything, but it isn't remotely necessary to make a righteous noise, and often makes for dreadfully boring music. Who gives a crap how fast you can waggle your fingers?

"Does it make me feel something?" is the question to ask.

Such a classic 'your da' thing. Only massive guitar solos are good.

Well it does but.....

Critically acclaimed essential listening "punk"? band you must hear before you die....or unlistenable crap led by a "working class" outspoken mancunian with no talent at all.....you decide..:cool:[/QUOTE
Does the class bit matter and do the old distinctions still apply?

Likening The Fall with Take That....now that takes some endeavour. Pop the bong away, blow out the incense sticks, give your hair a good wash and come back to planet Earth before those Osric Tentacles condemn you to another decade in the 70’s.
Actually I apologise. Whatever I think of The Fall they were not cynical paedo pop. Honest at least.

Not for me. I tried but could never get into them. They came across like a one-man’s (Smith’s) self-indulgent project, rather than a tight focused band.

Lydon did it much better with PIL.
