god yeah, will start a thread soon (cooking right now). reckon it should be music/film/art. need to think of a good name so don't look like a 'hipster' (don't get me started on that word!)

i tried combining the arts in one thread but it bombed...just too big a subject. i reckon stick to one theme: avant-garde rock, and post loads of links in the OP!

up to you, anyroad...you'll probably make a much better fist of it than me either way.

re: hipster. it's now hip to call out the hipsters. but soon that's not gonna be hip anymore, soon it will be hip to admit you're a hipster. after that, it will be hip to be normal (even now there's talk of Normal being in fashion, excrutiatingly it's a movement with a name: normcore).

anyone who takes any of this seriously is a nobhead, because being a nobhead's cool:

To me, the only people who use the word hipster are people who are intimidated by other people interests. If someone is interested in something that i know nothing about it i am interested on why they find it interesting, instead of dismissing it straight away with a simple put down.

good point, there's truth in that.

Originally, society needed a label to describe studenty-types who move to a happening city and mutually pat each other on the back talking about their art and their projects. i got pulled into it for a while but got out when i realised the artistic output these people were offering was invariably of little value.

As per the song above, the term "hipster" isn't describing someone with alternative taste in culture, it's describing someone who is claiming to contribute to alternative culture.

But as you say, the term has become so mainstream now (ha!) that we're hearing it derogatively describe people who just happen to prefer Atom Heart Mother over Dark Side of the Moon, or The Fall over The Beatles, or any other cultural taste that appears outside of the popular view.

ROWCHE RUMBLE!!!!!! Any chance somebody could get the video of this song and stick it up here please? Pretty please!!!

Saw the Fall loads of times in the early 80's and 90's. Brilliant live....best I saw them was outside a Clitheroe Castle supported by the Mel-o-tones. Mark E and his Mrs Brixie were great. Muzerewi's Daughter and Carey Grants Wedding were personal highlights.
