There is a Palace-Brighton rivalry?

Relatively recent.Stems from the mid seventies when those two young up and coming managers of the future Mullery and Venables were in charge. Both,(by some distance), the best team in the old div 3,(now league 1). Crystalised (pardon the pun) in an FA Cup Ist round, second replay (remember those?) at Stamford Bridge in December 1976. The ref (Ron Challis, known ever since by Seaweed fans as Challis of the Palace) awarded them a pen which was scored but disallowed because an attacking player had encroached. Follow up was saved. We scored the winner in extra time by a goal which was offside by a short bus ride. Mullery had to walk past Palace fans on his way to the tunnel at the end and reacted somewhat tetchily to sporting verbal commiserations from South London's finest.(ahem.) Rivalry which has spilled over in a number of very unsavoury incidents over the years was born.
Historically and geographically our rivals are Millwall and old gits of my generation still consider that to be the case. However, they reserve their real hatred for West Ham and merely hold us in derision. Worse, as we hadn't played Seaweed for some years when we were in the same Division as Charlton (aka Plucky Little Charlton) their younger fans insisted on creating a rivalry with us. We pay them no attention and do not respond. Not a proper same city rivalry, but (last Anfield deby aside) not as friendly either. ....................well.............you did ask!
