The ESPN basketball "sports guy" who fell in love with soccer...
There are two links that are listed below. Bill Simmons, most of you probably do not know. He is an ESPN basketball reporter. A major one who recently wrote a popular book in the US on basketball. A several years ago, (I am guessing here), he outed himself as being a newly mad convert to to the sport of soccer.
Length alert!!!!! These are relatively long, but very funny articles that a few of you might find interesting. They are well written reports from a new comer to the sport in the US. So, if you have some free time and want to read, then enjoy.
The first one is about traveling to Azteca to see the USA men play Mexico in the CONCACAF playoffs. It is a really humerous piece, (forgive him for some of his analogies to basketball). It is about the USAMNT team playing in Azteca, where they are 0-22-1. It is a scary place to place and he brings this all out in his colorful report. I also loved his comment that "he drank enough tequila to kill Salma Hayek". Also the LD corner where he got drenched in "stuff".

The second article is even longer. "Choosing my EPL team". After you read the first page, (the name of his blog is "page 2" so that there is no confusion), when you get to bottom of 1 then find the link for 2.
Simmons tells why he now loves soccer and what his new love has, that is missing in US sports. (He's right)! He also lists his criteria for finding an EPL team to support. What he liked and disliked about each of the teams, (most in detail), and then how he settled on one. (This article was written wayyyyyy long before Everton brought in Donovan, and started popping up more on the sports stations. I have since read that he has now two favorites, Everton now being one BTW, most of you will understand his remarks about the EPL teams more than I. He really did his homework and really went through a real sorting process.

I know that both are long, but they are funny and gives some insight into the growing popularity of soccer in the US. The fact that Simmons is a major sports commentator is even more enlightening. Both are entertaining reading and worth the time.
