Transfermarkt's figures for them seem way off: £11.7m Borini, £3.5m Assaidi, £4.4m Sahin, £1.7m Aquilani and £5.4m Adam.
Presuming that Rodgers was allowed a net spend of £10m, if he had the chance again, would he still spend £15m on a defensive midfielder (Allen) and £8.5m on an inexperienced striker (Borini)?
It's hard to figure out their transfer policy. The amount that they spent on Allen seems to suggest that Brendan was told he had money to spend, but then they could only afford £3m for one of their key targets (Dempsey). Perhaps Henry decided that it wasn't worth spending so much on someone who's likely to have little resale value? But the Guardian reports that they wanted to use Henderson as a makeweight, which implies lack of funds. The way that they hawked Carroll and Agger around appears to support that notion. Maybe they presumed that Newcastle or West Ham and City would come in with big offers for those two players and give them some extra spending power once they had recouped the fees for Allen and Borini? When that didn't happen they needed to tighten their belt and lose whatever dead wood they could to bring cash back in to the club.
Are Allen and Borini guaranteed a game if they play 4-1-4-1 with Lucas in front of the defence and Saurez operating as a lone striker? It seems like madness to release Maxi and Bellamy, to sell Kuyt for peanuts, to tell Cole that he's not wanted and to inform the world that Downing's only chance of playing on at the club is if he switches to full back. Especially as they haven't brought any proven wide players in.
Adam has lost 40% of his value in a year. They'll do very well if they get half back on what they paid for Carroll, Downing or Henderson. And it looks like they've made a mistake letting Thomas Ince go so cheaply. If they had to have a fire sale what assets do they really have? Skrtel and Saurez might be quite valuable and I've been impressed with Martin Kelly. Johnson (£17.5m), Agger (£6m), Lucas (£5m), Reina (£6m) and Enrique (£7m) might collectively retain their value. Gerrard will be 33 before the end of the season. So three really bankable assets from their entire squad then.
If Rodgers hadn't had those couple of years at Swansea do you think that Liverpool would have looked at him at Reading and thought "there is our next manager!"? Granted he did well, but Laudrup has lost Allen, Sigurdsson, Caulker and Sinclair and still seems to have taken them on to a different level.
