Lazio captain Stefano Mauri has been convicted of match-fixing and sentenced to a six-month ban, pending appeal.

The Serie A club have been fined €40,000 for their involvement in the fixing of two fixtures at the end of the 2010-11 season, although they will not be docked any points, as had been suggested.
Genoa, who also risked a points deduction, have been absolved while third division club Lecce have been fined €20,000. The punishments, which relate to the games between Lazio and Genoa on May 14, 2011 and Lazio and Lecce on May 22,

So as far as I can tell, Lazio are the main wrongdoers here, and have been fined $40,000, whilst there own player, who wasn't involved, but simply didn't report it has been banned for 6 months? Um, wtf? How does that work??? :o

They got fined more - a lot more - for racist chants in the Europa last season. As serious as racism is, match fixing is worse and these sentences just provide yet more evidence that Italian football is irredeemably bent.

So basically Mauri knew about it but couldn't say anything for fear of waking up with a horse's head in his bed.

Naturally, he gets banned for being between a rock and a hard place.

Lazio should be relegated for it, Italian football is completely screwed
