Will never understand this attitude tbh.
It may be a 'two bob' Cup, but it's more than we've won in fifteen years. I think the majority of fans would be pretty pi**ed off if we fielded a team with about 3 real senior players in.
Would it though ?I mean it would be pretty much the same teams, you'd just be removing the group stage and getting rid of some of the worst sides to begin with. Making it knockout only wouldn't make it more prestigious, it would just make it shorter. If it was a genuine knockout cup it would be superb. The Cup Winners Cup was a great competition..

The main reason no-one takes it seriously is the money isn't it? Making the prize per match the same value as the Champions League, but cutting the number of games so it's shorter, would be a fairly reasonable way of making at least some teams take it more seriously.

Noharmdone is right on this one, mate. If it's pure knockout weaker teams are more likely to go further.
And making it shorter is a step in the right direction too, because it is just too many games right now. The best way to make it more prestigous is to get rid of the CL knockouts joining it and reduce the size of the Cl so better teams end up in the europa.
Taking out strong CL teams dropping down, thus making the level of opposition lower, wouldn't make the thing more prestigious.
I still want those teams in the competition, though. I just don't want them to get into it by losing games.
Reduce the numbers of teams in both competitions so that both fields become stronger and you don't need to have the weaker CL teams play in the El to make it strong.
But if they did that we'd most likely never have a chance of getting in the thing in the first place, and it would just make the CL less exciting because you'd have a smaller variety of teams entering it.
i would be pissed off, especially if i were a newcastle fan, what was the point in all their hard work last season not to be arsed this season. they're not going to be CL contenders this season so what are they saving for?
