Before I start, its only my own personal opinion.. but as a footy fan who will watch almost anything.. I just cant be ar*ed with watching most European games now..

It needs to go back to a knockout two legs cup competition.

Yeah, I know its a great money spinner due to the TV Rights, but some of the games are just mundane stuff.

Look at City last night, didnt even sell out their allocation to Amsterdam ffs ! Spurs tonight, were they really bothered ??

Would love to know fellow Blues opinions on this, and if we did get through in the next few seasons, would it be a genuine 'stepping stone' ??

No, it'd be a hindrance. It's been discussed before - a lot of Evertonians would fancy the trips etc. as they're a good laugh and something different, but if we held serious ambitions of Champions League qualification then you'd throw the Europa League every year you qualify.

They need to balance out the prize money and restructure the EL to make it somewhat viable. As it is, it's about as useful as the League Cup with about the same level of prestige.

It'll never happen because of TV, as you point out, but I'd like to see the Champions League revert to a knockout formula for league champions only, no spot for the defending champion unless they earn their way back in. I'd also want to see the Europa League spots given to the second- and maybe third-place teams, depending on the country, and again a knockout formula. And bring back the Cup-Winners' Cup. Basically, turn back the clock to 1985.
Right now, the formats are a joke and more often than not a long run in Europe hamstrings a team's domestic form. Most of the time a bad thing, but if it applies to the ****e, I hope they get to the Europa semis and fall flat in the EPL.

It seems to be the same teams every year. They are seeded so these " Teams " get through to the interesting part of the tournament. Add the fact these CL " teams" might not qualify and end up in the Europa, makes a farce of that competition imo. Get back to the old days where you played a side twice , and got knocked out if you were crap. The way it stands, Barcelona might get beaten by Cluj twice, yet still go on and win the trophy. Anyway, I'm with you on the viewing side. I'll only watch if the mighty Blues are playing...COYB !!!

* Channel 5 on Thursdays were great (y)

I would have thought a lot of City fans would have fancied Amsterdam last night ( I know there was some bother ) but I really think the interest is waining for such a long league format..

The Cup Winners Cup was a very good competition. For sides that actually won something !

Europa league wont get any respect until it stops letting CL teams drop into it. The quality can be very good but teams just arent arsed doing anything until hte later rounds as they dont wanna put loads of effort in, only to get drawn with a monster team in teh first KO round.

Good shout that..

I enjoy european football hugely both as a neutral and, when everton are in it, as a fan. it's great to watch teams you've never heard of and players you won't have seen before and being able to see how your guys do against the best of other countries.

Is it true that the current formats are much worse then the straight knock outs? Yes, for lots of reasons, the domination of the top leagues, the domination of the top teams within those leagues because of the cl money, the way the group stage formats reduces the chance of upsets, the way the europa league has been so devalued by the expansion of the cl and the way drop outs from that end up there, the way you'll never see a team you've honestly never heard of play a top team anymore cos of seeding etc.

But in the end it's europe, UEFA can do whatever they want to it, they'll never ruin the magic compeltely.

Agree that it's boring, not sure that kind of format change would be beneficial though.

As said before, champs league teams that failed to qualify shouldn't end up in the europa.

The Champions League is NOT boring.

English teams are boring in it. But teams like Dortmund, Schalke etc... Are far from boring. Your view actually makes me think you're just watching the wrong games mate.

The Europa League similar. English teams clearly don't give a sh*t about it but I watch the highlights of it and the Dutch, Spanish etc... All put out strong teams and are very entertaining.

Just don't watch the English teams mate.

To be fair he's saying the Group Stage format is boring, not the actual teams.

Oh I know. But it's not.

Even Montpellier vs Olympiakis was a good match last night.

Yeah, the group stages aren't any more boring overall than any other set of league games. Some PL matches are boring, some CL matches are boring.

Ajax v City last night was a very exciting match, and their game against Dortmund the other week was good too. I watched the highlights of Real Madrid v Ajax and that looked like an action packed game.

Some PL matches, particularly the 'Monday Night Football' ones, are awful. And if i didn't support Everton i would have turned off our game against West Brom on new years after about 15 minutes. One of the worst games of footy i've ever seen.

don't think it's boring at all, much prefer it to the prem. (when it comes to neutral games obviously)

most games are more boring when they don't involve your team though

I would like to go back to the old formats myself but it will never happen. I can't be arsed with european footy anymore we never get there which dulls my enthusiasm to watch it.
