The "Big Society"

Should Voting to be compulsory discuss (btw nice to see Bruce "come out of the closet" so to speak).

On a side note Cameron (as other tory and indeed labour PM's have seen themselves) as CEO UKPLC so why within hours of taking office was He,Osbourne and Clegg crying that the UK was days away from Bankruptcy? it was utter nonsense of not an outright lie told by these clueless individuals yet now after months of cut, cut, cut we're etc the economy is teetering on the brink again of recession if it does go into recession again then surely these 3 in particular must be held to account as they've undermined public and consumer confidence for their own political means (the VAT hike for one).

If they'd have acted this way in private business they would be sacked outright simple as that, the 3 of them have as much political talent as the masturbating cat in the picture a couple of posts back.

Bruce's point's about house building is a good one but whereas he see's it as a problem i see-it as democracy for all of it's faults and if it wasn't there we'd be living in a dictatorship a one party state and we all know how well that works.

Going back to the Big Society nonsense for a moment Tubey raised a very valid point about CAB's being closed down what on earth is this going to achieve? nothing but hardship for those that need that advice that's for sure this move (call me cynical if you want) is coming at a time when the Tories are pretty much after dismantling the welfare state with the Libdum's following in tow behind them it's a shocking state of affairs that the least able, the sick and the lame are under constant attack from Cameron downwards, the media, etc it's disgusting.

This undersells us completely. I see it thus.

1) Dictatorships and other countries that are generally speaking pretty ****ty for their inhabitants are often so because they lack the legal framework within which society can really flourish.

2) Western democracy provides that framework but governments have extended their remit into a vast array of other activities, many of which they are not particularly good at. Better than stage 1 but still not delivering what we deserve.

3) So for me a good third stage would be for government to continue providing the legal framework for society but leave the supply of everything to other organisations (be they commercial, non-profit or whatever).

We've moved beyond a fear of some kind of dictatorial environment. True enlightenment will come when governments let go of the reins completely and do the job they were initially formed to do. As Ibn Khaldun said

"government should be restrained to a minimum for as a necessary evil, it is the constraint of men by other men."

But will we ever see the day of utopia, the day any government lets go of power?

Not in my lifetime Buddy it just wont happen, for everything they flog off they'll create more to use us sadly we have to accept it.
